Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants replace missing teeth from the root of your tooth to the crown. Most traditional replacement options, like crowns, bridges, and dentures, rest on your gums. They only replace the crowns of the teeth, which are visible above the gum line.

By replacing the roots, which connect your teeth to your jawbone, dental implants provide a stable foundation for prosthetic teeth that look and feel like a natural set.

I am considering dental implants for missing teeth. What are the benefits?

Dental implants can permanently replace missing teeth. Popular benefits include:

Appearance

Dental implants offer a natural and aesthetically pleasing look, seamlessly blending with your existing teeth to enhance your smile.

Function

Restore proper chewing and speaking functions with implants that fuse to your jawbone.

Durability

Dental implants outlast all other teeth replacement options, often lasting 25 years or more.

Comfort

Because they can’t shift or loosen like dentures, dental implants feel as comfortable as your natural teeth.

I am getting dental implants. How should I prepare?

Dr. Park and her team assess your gums, teeth, and tooth-supporting bone to determine whether you’re a candidate for dental implants. If you don’t have sufficient bone density to support the implants, they may recommend a bone graft.

Recovery after this procedure can take up to 3-4 months. Before dental implant surgery, the team also removes any damaged or decayed teeth.

What happens during dental implant surgery?

Before surgery, the team administers anesthesia so you may slip in and out of consciousness. Next, Dr. Ng-A-Fook creates an access hole in your gum tissue and jawbone to insert the implant. Finally, he stitches the incision and packs your mouth with gauze. Your mouth may be tender and swollen for 1-2 weeks after the procedure.

What happens after I get dental implants?

The healing process takes about 6-12 weeks. Once your mouth fully heals, Dr. Park and her team take impressions using the iTero® intraoral scanner to create your replacement teeth. They may recommend single or multiple crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures, which they connect at your final appointment.
